As we've mentioned earlier, there was some pain to the build of the S4 MTM most of which was directly related to the service provided by the Main dealer.  We've focused primarily on general problems, manufacturer recalls, and what was done to resolve them.

We've also given each issue a "fix" rating which takes into account how well the work was performed by the dealership, and how well the customer was taken care of in each circumstance.  Here is a table depicting the ratings:

Excellent
Very good
Not exceptional
Poor
Indefensible
Date Issue Rectification Outcome Rating
May '99 Rubber bonnet seal falls into fan space and damages plastic blades Main dealer replaced parts under warranty Parts were ordered in advance, customer was provided with a loan vehicle during the work which took one day

July '99 Throttle body "Y" pipe develops a split.  Vehicle looses power Main dealer misdiagnoses the fault and after taking a VAG 1552 reading tells the customer that the ECU has been reset and not to drive the car too hard as the "rev limit has been surpassed by the driver" ECU is reset and all fault codes cleared resulting in the car working fine until the customer was half way home - the problem resurfaced and the car is booked in for the following weekend for additional diagnostics

July '99 Throttle body "Y" pipe develops a split.  Vehicle looses power Main dealer is unable to diagnose any issues, but again explains to the customer that the "rev limit" was surpassed by the driver.  A quick chat with the customer service manager allows the fault to be identified as a split in the rubber throttle body "Y" pipe. The part is unavailable from stock due to Scott Evered at AmD having bought up the entire regions stock of five units

Aug '99 Throttle body "Y" pipe develops a split.  Vehicle looses power The S4 is returned to the dealership for replacement of the defective pipe.  The car is also "marked" for recall and fitted with additional reinforced intercooler hoses. On collection, the car drives well, but on the final approach home, the engine looses power.  The cars engine then shuts down completely at 60mph and will not restart by kicking the clutch.  Ignition key is turned on and off which resets the ECU - the car's clutch is then kicked again and the engine fires, restoring confidence in the brake and steering.  The RAC is called and find that the jubilee clips on one of the replaced intercooler hoses were not tightened

Aug '99 Work carried out under recall is re-inspected The S4 makes another visit back to the dealership who put the car on a ramp and re-check that all hoses are secure.  The dealer makes known that in their opinion if the car was not fitted with an MTM Stage 1 (306BHP) ECU, it is unlikely that the "Y" pipe problem would have occurred Hoses are secured and the car runs to specification

Oct '99 Driver information system display is dim towards bottom of screen Difficult to follow directions given by the Satellite Navigation system and becomes quite irritating Dealer confirms problem and orders replacement unit.  Unit is fitted, but a scratch is found on the lower dashboard panel and disputed

Jan '00 Bose rear speaker develops a rattle Unit is ordered and replaced without incident No issues

Mar '00 A visit to the local Club-Audi meeting reveals on inspection that the fan pulley has scratches on it and is exhibiting signs of rust This "damage" is traced back to the bonnet seal falling into the fan area back in May '99.  The technician concerned failed to use the pulley lock tool and instead removed the fan with a large mole grip The unit is replaced under warranty and an apology is extended from the dealership

July '00 Second gear seems to exhibit some notchiness when engaged The dealership checks out the car and finds nothing "out of spec" with the car.  The selector was checked and found to be "fine" On the way back home from the dealership, the 2nd gear makes a noise and the selector becomes inoperable

Aug '00 Gearbox failure The RAC removes the car to the dealership for inspection The dealer keeps the car for two weeks before getting the authorisation for a new gearbox under warranty.  No courtesy vehicle is provided.

Aug '00 Nearside turbo fails Vehicle is returned to dealership for inspection.  The dealership explains that they have a new policy which excludes any vehicle with an ECU modification from receiving warrantable work on mechanical parts. Audi are unable to defend their "about turn" on vehicles with modified ECUs, but that opens the door for some serious modifications to be performed on the S4.  After conferring with Cister Automotive, options are drawn from two of their suppliers.  a 450BHP MTM conversion is commissioned, with work starting in January 2001.
